Sonoma Botanical Garden

John and I arrived at the Sonoma Botanical Garden after my second day attending the PBL World 2024 conference. The botanical garden is northwest of Sonoma in Glen Ellen. Having arrived right at closing time, we did not have a lot of time to explore the gardens. I wandered through the Asian Woodlands area and saw several unfamiliar trees with the exception of a dogwood tree. I can imagine how peaceful it would be to take an afternoon and wander through the grounds. The quiet sounds of nature and the gentle fountain bring such a sense of peace, calmness, and well-being.

The Sonoma Botanical Garden offers a special event called Acoustic Sunsets on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. Each week it hosts a different musician and a different sponsor. On June 26, Clay Bell played both the acoustic guitar and ukele as Aaron Durr accompanied him on the keyboard. I loved the songs and wanted to sing along with them. Some of my favorite songs included "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" by James Taylor, "Here Comes the Sun" by George Harrison, and "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison. He also sang a song called "Early Bird" that I really liked. The grass-covered hill was terraced perfectly so attendees could put down a blanket and lawn chairs on each level. We brought along a simple picnic lunch. Other people brought along quite fancy spreads, including fancy table cloths and wine glasses.

The event was sponsored by Sangiacomo Vineyards. The hospitality sales manager, Andrew Smith, was so easy-going, gracious, and friendly. We were able to sample several of their wines, which I highly recommend. My favorite was the 2023 Vin Gis (rosé) of Pinot Noir.

Currently, the garden is showcasing a "Ribbit Exhibit." There are 23 large frog sculptures placed throughout the grounds. I immediately fell in love with Trombone Shorty since I played the bass trombone from fifth-grade through my first three years at the University of Oregon in the Fighting Ducks Marching Band. Here in the garden, Trombone Shorty plays alongside Miles Davis (trumpet) and Charlie Parker (alto saxophone). I also loved Freddie - aka The Butterfly Boy. Be sure to check out the rest of the frog sculptures.
